Material Artist

What will you do?

The Material Artist plays a crucial role in creating the visual world of video games. In this role, you will work closely with the modeling team to create materials, textures, and effects that bring life and unique identity to 3D assets. As a central hub for cross-project material development, you will influence the overall look and feel of the company's creations. This position is ideal for individuals who combine excellent artistic abilities with a technical understanding of materials and rendering processes, and who enjoy developing creative solutions that enhance visual quality.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create photorealistic or stylized materials, textures, and surface details for 3D models, including environments, props, and characters.
  • Utilize tools like Substance Designer, Substance Painter, Photoshop, and game engines (e.g., Unreal Engine, Unity) to develop and implement materials.
  • Develop modular material libraries for use across various company projects.
  • Collaborate with modeling teams to ensure optimal implementation of materials on different assets.
  • Research and adopt innovative material creation techniques to improve visual quality.
  • Maintain visual consistency of materials across all projects.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any material-related issues in the game engine.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a Material Artist, Texture Artist, or similar role in game development.
  • Strong portfolio showcasing a variety of materials and textures (realistic and stylized).
  • Proficiency in Substance Designer/Painter, Photoshop, and 3D software (e.g., Maya, Blender, ZBrush).
  • Knowledge of PBR (Physically Based Rendering) workflows and shader creation.
  • Familiarity with game engines like Unreal Engine or Unity.
  • Strong understanding of color theory, lighting, and composition.
  • Excellent communication and team work skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with procedural texturing and node-based workflows.
  • Knowledge of shader programming (HLSL, GLSL).
  • Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Perforce, Git).
  • Ability to develop materials that balance optimal performance with high visual quality.
  • Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining consistency and high standards.
